That’s right, J-Law spent the night before Christmas in a Children’s hospital in her home town. The 24 year-old was home for the holidays in Louisville, Kentucky when she got into the Christmas spirit and dropped in to wish patients at Kosair Children’s Hospital a Merry Christmas.

So, whilst she may play the Hunger Games hero, Katniss Everdeen, Jennifer has shown how easy it is to be a real life hero by reminding us that as we’ve all been busy unwrapping presents and enjoying huge Christmas dinners at home with friends and family, others haven’t been so fortunate!

Mum’s Homemade Mince Pies

Christmas Eve is just around the corner. The tree is up, the cards have been sent and presents are (nearly) all wrapped. So what better way to prepare for the big day than enjoying yur own, homemade mince pies?

Not only do they make delicious Christmas nibbles (much nicer than the one from the shops!), but they’re so quick and simple to make – and the perfect present for that person who has everything!

Here at Grrrl’s Life we had a go with mum’s trusty old family recipe, which we wanted to share with you guys. Comment below or on Facebook and let us know how you get on with your own! And why not share your own Christmas recipes? We’d love to hear from you.

Aaaaaaand we’ll just put this here so you can have a little sing a long with Taylor Swift’s Christmas playlist whilst you’re baking:

INGREDIENTS

  • 225g cold butter, diced
  • 350g plain flour
  • 100g golden caster sugar
  • 280g mincemeat
  • 1 small egg

1. To make pastry: Rub butter into flour and mix in caster sugar. Roll into a ball.

Once you’ve cut out the pastry cases, pop them into the tray

4. Use shaped cutters to make lids from left over pastry

You can use shaped cutters like starts and christmas trees to as an even more festive edge to your mince pies - and if you use both the cut out an dleft over pastry you won't waste any!

Leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then remove to a wire rack.

6. Lightly dust with icing sugar.

And done in half an hour! Dont worry, you don’t have to eat them all at once, they’ll keep for 3 to 4 days in an airtight container. Good luck!

Emma Watson wins a new award – and it’s not for acting!

Emma Watson, otherwise known as Hermione in the Harry Potter films, has won another award…..for being a top grrrrl.

Emma Watson: Voted a top grrrl power feminist

Emma Watson: Voted a top grrrl power feminist

We recently shared a post on Facebook about how inspired one girl has been by the female characters in recent books and films. Hermione from The Harry Potter  books, and played by Emma Watson in the films, was just one of those characters who Mia looked up to. And it’s easy to see why:

Determined, brave, clever and hard-working Hermione is certainly someone to admire but so is Emma herself – she has just been voted the Top Celebrity Feminist of 2014.

“So what IS feminism?!” we hear you cry. It’s pretty simple really. It’s all about men, women, girls and boys from all backgrounds, all shapes, and sizes, being treated equally by each other.

Another celebrity feminist is Beyonce, who was voted the 4th by Cosmopolitan magazine readers. It’s no wonder she was there either after that incredible VMAs performance this year, where she explained in her own unique way, why feminism matter to grrrls like YOU:

(For the best bit start watching at 11:34)

Emma also summed feminism up pretty well in a recent speech she made about feminism. It’s a pretty serious speech and it’s nowhere near as fun as Queen Bey’s but if you want to learn more, here it is:

With everyone else voting for the top feminist celebrities, why not share who is youre favourite feminist character from Mia’s list? You can vote in the poll below and let us knwo who you look up to:
